Materials:
White Crochet Thread Size 10 (Bedspread Weight), Fingering/Baby Yarn
1/4“ Ribbon (Optional)

Gauge:
Small #4 Steel Crochet Hook: 8 dc = 1“ (1-2 lbs. Approx. 9“ chest size / 12“ long)

Medium #3 Steel Crochet Hook: 7 dc = 1“ (2 1/2-3 lbs. Approx. 10 1/4“ chest size / 14“ long)

Large #2 Steel Crochet Hook: 6 dc = 1“ (3 -4 lbs. Approx. 12“ chest size / 16“ long)

Baby yarn - Use B/C/D Hook for over 4 lbs. (I used a C and mine was about 13 1/4“ / 18“ long)

Ch 50

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and each chain across. Ch 3, turn. (48 dc)

Row 2: Dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc* repeat from * to * across, ending with dc in last 2 dc. Ch 3, turn. (70)

Row 3: Dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc* repeat from * to * across, ending with dc in last 3 dc. Ch 3, turn. (92)

Row 4: Dc in next 3 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc* repeat from * to *. Ch 3, turn. (114)

Row 6: Dc in each dc across, increasing 2 stitches evenly spaced. Ch 1, turn. (116)

Row 12: Dc in next 2 dc, *shell in ch 2 space, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc" repeat from * to * across. Ch 3, turn.

Repeat Row 12 for pattern until desired length.

Sleeves:

If you want to make longer sleeves, join thread in 3rd chain of 1st shell, sl st to ch 2 space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, (shell) in same space, skip next 3 sts, dc in next 2 dc, *shell in ch 2 space, skip next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts,* around, join in top of ch 3. Continue working in rounds as above, until sleeve is approx. 2-1/2-3“ or desired length. You can now do a row of sc around is you want the sleeve to look tapered.

Make 3 sets of ties evenly spaced along back edge by joining with slip st, ch about 7“ and sl st in each ch st. Fasten off. Ribbon could be threaded through first row at neck edge. Tie a bow in front with an angel pin or baby rose attached.

Use a small hook & follow directions for smaller size with yarn

Sizes: Newborn-3 Mo. (3", 2 1/2" & 2" in parenthesis)

Beading Row (See Alternatives): Turn to work beading row along bottom edge of hat. Work *dc, ch 1, skip next side st, ch 1* along bottom edge, working in unworked sts on back edge of hat. (You want an even # of spaces so the ribbon threads correctly.) Fasten off.

Front Edge: From right side, join with sl st in first st, ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, *skip next 2 dc, (shell) 5 dc, ch 2, 5 dc in next ch 2 space, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc,* repeat from * to * across. Fasten off.

Thread ribbon through beading row.

Alternatives: If you prefer not to use ribbon, make a chain approx. 12“ long, sl st in each ch, join in first st along bottom edge of hat, sc across, repeat chain for other side and fasten off. The beading row could also be omitted and sc or hdc along bottom edge of hat and sew ribbon to each side.
