Ellen's Ruffled Hat Large Preemie - Newborn size: Size 8 16" circular needle or Size 8 DPN's. DK weight yarn (For a larger newborn size, use worsted weight yarn.) CO 96 sts. Join being careful not to twist the yarn. Row 1: Purl Rows 2 - 5: Knit Row 6: Knit 2 tog around (48 sts) Row 7: Purl Row 8: Knit Row 9 (Eyelet row): *K 2 tog, YO* around (48 sts) Knit for ~ 2 ¾" before beginning decreasing at the crown. Decrease for the crown: Row 1: *K 2 tog, k 6* around (42 sts) Row 2: Knit Row 3: *K 2 tog, K5* around (36 sts) Row 4: Knit Row 5: *K 2 tog, K4* around (30 sts) Row 6: Knit Row 7: *K2 tog, K3* around (24 sts) Row 8: Knit Row 9: *K2 tog, K2* around (18 sts) Row 10: *K2 tog, K1* around (12 sts) Row 11: *K 2 tog around (6 sts) Row 12: *K2 tog, K1, K 2 tog, K1. (4 sts) Rows 13 - 16: Knit Run yarn through remaining 4 stitches and tie off inside topknot. Run ¼" ribbon through eyelets. NOTES: · Immediately after the k 2 together row (Row 6), and a couple rows after that, it typically looks like that hat is too big. Don't let this worry you! As you continue to knit, the hat is drawn in. · If you like a fuller ruffle, just add more stitches when you cast on, but when decreasing you need to do additional decreases in Row 6 so that you have the 48 stitches remaining. |
